Health and Science Pipeline Initiative

What does the Health And Science Pipeline Initiative provide to
​local San Diego County partners?

As a service to our local San Diego partners, we can organize in-class presentations and training from industry and college partners directly at school sites to address topics such as Career Readiness, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and Guest Speaker Presentations.

Career Readiness Presentation

Presentations on career readiness, which are 30-45 minutes long, aim to prepare students for the work field and provide basic training on career readiness. This presentation is required prior to when a guest speaker is scheduled to present to your class, and highly recommended for students that are planning to apply to internships, and volunteer programs.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, basic training, is a 30-45 minute presentation designated to provide students with a basic comprehension of HIPAA, as well as train students on the conduct that is expected of this law. Because students in the health pathway pursue careers in the medical field, it is essential and recommended for them to gain a brief understanding of this law for their potential careers and internships/volunteer services.

Topics Covered In This Basic Training:
  • Definition of HIPAA (What is it? Whom does it apply to? Etc.…)
  • How HIPAA affects the student
  • Consequences of violating HIPAA
  • Examples of HIPAA
  • Quiz Activity

Guest Speaker Presentations

Guest speaker presentations consist of health care industry workers delivering in-classroom presentations to students regarding their career, education, and experience. Students gain insight on the health profession's daily schedule, tasks, and an overall sense of the career the guest speaker is presenting. Additionally, guest speakers can address any questions or concerns the students might have.
